Cosmos Mystery Area

After visiting Mount Rushmore, we drove up the road a bit to the Cosmos Mystery Area.

The Cosmos was discovered in 1952 by two college boys looking for a place to build a cabin. They came upon the area and noticed disorientation and the strange way the law of gravity appeared to work in the area. They entered an old cabin and we so perplexed by the phenomenon that they decided to fix up the building and offer tours.

As you tour through the Cosmos, gravity appears to act strangely as demonstrations show water flowing uphill, a ball that sits without rolling on a board that appears to slope downward, and a chair sitting in a corner that appears to lean out into the room, only to fall back in the corner when it is let go.

The odd angle of the floor causes everyone to lean at odd angles.
Uncle Jeremy and Kinsley stand on the walls leaning out into the room
Felicity, Clare, and Bernadette sit with their cousins Mason and Brody

Sometimes just walking across the floor is a challenge

Sharply angled floors make it hard to walk.

The Cosmos is always a good time. There are many people who spend their time there trying to figure all the tricks out, but the thing that makes the Cosmos special is the way they present the naturally occurring phenomenon called a gravity hill or a magnetic hill. There are about 40 of these documented in the United States and many more throughout the world, but few can present such a good time as the Cosmos.
