When we were originally planning our summer vacation, we had planned on just the six of us making the trip (seven if you count Zellie). However, we realized that if we would get together with family, it could be a lot of fun for everyone. Thus we began extending invitations and arranging plans to meet Grandma Patti and Grandpa Joe and share a cabin near Rapid City. The invitation was extended to all of Papa's siblings and all but one were able to take us up on it. The cabin we rented was rated to sleep 12-15 adults. We ended up with Papa and Mama having their own room, the four girls sharing a bedroom, Grandma and Grandpa having a room, the Borer Family with a room, the Troidl family with a room, and Adam taking the hide-a-bed upstairs while his girl friend Jihan took the hide-a-bed downstairs. All told, 10 adults and 7 kids stayed very comfortably in this beautiful cabin.
The cabin itself was about six miles south of Lead. We originally tried following directions we had printed off of Google Maps. After about 45 minutes of driving around high up the mountain, we realized that we weren't in the right place. We then went off the directions provided by the rental agency and quickly realized that we should have used those instructions instead. When we found the cabin, we were amazed at the HUGE deck, the spacious layout, and many aspects that one doesn't usually see in a cabin. The one feature that we thought might be lacking was an air conditioner. Fortunately, the three days we spent there were mild and the night temperatures were almost chilly. It was great to spend the extra time together, all sharing this living space and we felt like the cabin atmosphere really added to our enjoyment of the trip.
The cabin had a hot tub, which unfortunately we didn't have time to enjoy, satellite TV, WiFi internet access, and a very up to date kitchen, providing us with all the comforts of home in this remote location. It was a very nice place to stay and a good bargain for our large group.
