Lake Wanahoo SRA NEGPP #15

One wish Jeremy had for Father's Day was to go fishing. Since we didn't have a chance to on the weekend prior to Father's Day and we were on the way back from a wedding on Father's Day, we decided to go fishing and hit another of our GPP destinations on Sunday, June 23rd for a little fishing. We chose to go to Lake Wanahoo near Wahoo, NE.
This newer lake is located just north of Wahoo, NE. The lake itself covers approximately 622 acres, but the SRA is 1,777 acres. This lake affords camping, hiking, fishing, picnicking, and some water sports. However, boaters should be wary of the submerged trees.
Upon arrival, after a quick potty break for the little ones, we headed for our marker. 1/2 mile from the parking lot didn't seem like it would be much of an adventure, and it wouldn't have been save the wildlife along the trail. What did we see, you might ask? No deer, turkey, coyotes, or other large animals. A couple of birds and some flying insects, yes. But the main presence along the trail was the ticks. They were present in droves. If you happen to try this trail for yourself, we must recommend some kind of repellent. As we walked along, Jeremy looked down to notice that he had 5 on his legs. After announcing this, Bernadette removed 5 as well. The entire trip there and back was spent taking a few steps, pausing to remove ticks, and then continuing. Final tallies were: Jeremy = 30, Kati = 5, Bernadette = 11, Clare = 6, and Felicity = 5. Gabriella got no ticks as she spent the trip in the backpack. On that note, the path was surrounded by wildflowers and was in fact very pretty.

Jeremy watches as two ticks race up his leg looking for a spot spot to bite.
We find our marker, but the girls were a little scared of all the ticks.

Not wanting to let a few ticks spoil our trip, we went to the pier and started fishing. After half an hour, we were all just about to call it a bust when one of the poles had a small hit. The the other. Would our worms on a hook provide us some entertainment? The bobber dunked and didn't resurface. This was to happen a number of times that day and 11 of those times amounted to someone catching a fish. One of these fish would prove to be special.

Felicity with the first fish of the day. We bait the hook for them and cast it out, but we let them take care of reeling it in. They get quite the kick out of that. In the background, Clare is holding her favorite part of fishing: the worms. She will  spend most of our trip playing with the worms - naming them, pretending, etc. This from a girl who used to be scared of Rollie Pollies (pill bugs).
Bernadette with her first fish.

After Kati cast this one out, she handed the pole to Bernadette who after a minute noticed the bobber go under. She reeled and reeled and the line whistled, but finally, she got this monster on shore. At first Jeremy thought it was a catfish, but after some research we have been told that this was a bullhead. It measured just over 15 inches, which by Nebraska regulations earns its captor a Master Angler Award, if you are doing catch and release, which is the only kind of fishing we do. Bernadette was very proud of her catch, but who can blame her.

Lissie wins the award for the smallest catch of the day, snagging this little guy.

Ella watched patiently from her seat in the backpack. She enjoyed some Twizzlers and thought we were all pretty silly throwing things in the water and pulling them back out.
We had a great time fishing and when the numbers were tallied, Felicity had reeled in 6 fish, Bernadette had 5 including her bullhead, and Clare, well she had a great time playing with the worms.

After the fishing was done, we decided to take a little walk.

We headed across the land-bridge, but didn't quite make it as night was sneaking up on us. All told, this turned into a fun day for all of us.

Oh, and once we were all home and showered, we tallied the tick bites for the day: 0. Yup, it really was a great day...
