Fort Atkinson SHP (NEGPP2014)

Next stop: Fort Atkinson. Lissie was slightly disappointed that this wasn't the town of Atkinson, but we ended up having a good time.

Located near present-day Fort Calhoun, Fort Atkinson allows visitors to step back into the early 19th century (circa 1827). On various weekends throughout the year, they have Living History, where guests can see how people lived in the 1820s. This features blacksmiths, tinsmiths, laundry, school teachers, soldiers, butter churning, spinners and weavers, and more. The post was built in 1819 near the place where Lewis and Clark held council with Oto and Missouria Native Americans.

We headed into history on one of the days when the Living History display was happening.

Heading into the fort.

The girls checking out one of the rooms used for lodging.

Bernadette learned how they did laundry back then.

And Clare and Lissie learned how to hang it out to dry.

The girls learn from the blacksmith how to start a fire with no matches.

We found our post. Watch out for the cannon blasts though!
